It is a modified market cap weighted index and is therefore, more heavily influenced by its large cap stocks.

The largest 10 components by market capitalization on September, 5, 2008 were Apple, Cisco, Gilead Sciences, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Qualcomm, Research In Motion and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. These stocks represented nearly 50% of the value of the index and are dominated by companies in the technology industry.
