Market Cap is an abbreviation for market capitalization which is a measure of the size of a company. More specificially, market cap measures the value of the company. To determine a company's market cap, just multiply the share price by the number of shares outstanding. For Example: Exxon Mobil, traded at $77 per share on 8/15/08 with roughly 5.19 billion shares outstanding. Its market cap was $400 billion (5,190,000,000 x $77). In other words, the company was worth $400 billion on that date. |
